The mechanism

Deep-tissue massage works on muscle and fascia. Into Coherence works on a different system entirely. The skin carries a specialized class of nerve fiber, C-tactile afferents, that respond to slow, light, stroking contact.

Unlike the fibers that report pressure or texture to the somatosensory cortex, C-tactile signals route through the posterior insula, a region tied to interoception and emotional processing rather than discriminative touch. In simpler terms, this class of touch is not built to tell the brain what it is feeling. It is built to tell the brain it is safe and can fully relax.

Researchers call this category affective touch, a term drawn from clinical and neuroscience literature. When it is delivered at its optimal pace, the resulting cascade is measurable: activation of the brain's reward circuitry, a release of endorphins and dopamine, a rise in oxytocin, and a documented shift toward parasympathetic, "rest and digest," dominance. The pleasurable, almost hypnotic quality of the sensation is the mechanism doing its work.
